Living Classics

A new way to learn classics!

The Living Classics international young readers competition is Russia’s largest children’s literature project, bringing together the spontaneity, uniqueness and vibrancy of children’s talents.

Why should I take part in this competition?

Living Classics helps to instill a love of reading to a young generation through meeting great works of world literary heritage, as well as to inspire them to create and express themselves in a new way. The competition gives an opportunity to engage with other young speakers from all over the world with its main prize being a trip to the Artek International Children’s Center, Crimea.

Terms and conditions:

  • Anyone between the ages of 10 and 17 may participate in the competition;
  • Competition is free of charge for all participants;
  • Participants are expected to recite a fragment of any classical prosaic text written in (or translated into) the Russian language;
  • Participants may read their fragments by heart or use a print out for their convenience;
  • Each performance is expected to last between 2 and 5 minutes;
  • Participants are allowed and encouraged to use a musical background, costumes or props to make their performances stand out.

Competition Dates:

The contest is split into several rounds:

  • February 16, 2019 – Classes round (Levels 5 – 11, АР, PC);
  • February 23, 2019 – School round at Metaphor Academic Center;
  • March, 2019 – National final at the Russian Cultural Center in Washington, D.C.;
  • May 4-25, 2019 – International final round at the Artek International Children’s Center in Crimea.

  • Choose a part of the classics OR ask our teachers to help your child to choose, learn and prepare a performance.

How can I prepare for the competition?

Metaphor teachers will be happy to help our students ages 10 and older to find a suitable book and to prepare a memorable performance for the contest.

Deadline: January 15, 2019.

Participation fee: Participation if FREE and open to all children aged from 10 to 17.

Awards: All participants receive certificates, and the top winners also look forward to special prizes.
