Discover Your Strengths!

Metaphor Academic Center offers a special Saturday program that not only teaches Russian language, literature and culture, but also prepares high school students for the NEWL/Prototype AP Russian exam that is administered right here, at our school. Successfully passing the exam can give a student a major advantage while applying to a range of US colleges.

Why should I take this exam?

The NEWL (Prototype AP): Russian test is intended for Russian language secondary students who wish to engage in rigorous university-level study before high school graduation. The exam is designed to provide a set of measures of functional proficiency in Russian for use as a predictive assessment for continued language study beyond high school and as a placement tool by American colleges and universities for entering freshmen with prior study of Russian.

The National Examinations in World Languages (NEWL®) is an initiative of the American Councils for International Education. NEWL® offers an AP®-equivalent assessment of language proficiency levels which provide high school students—both traditional foreign language learners and heritage learners—with AP®-style score reports that can be used to apply for college credit and/or placement.

How to earn credit for the AP Russian scores?

The College Board has formally endorsed NEWL and has recommended to its 6,000+ member institutions that NEWL scores be treated the same as a comparable AP® score. Learn more>>

However, Metaphor administration asks parents of our senior students to keep in mind that each college and university determines its own policies for the use of the examination scores. Find out more about AP Credit Policies of the colleges here>>
